Dr. Castillo earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of California, Davis and received Postdoctoral training in the laboratories of Charles Turner, PhD, IUPUI and Christopher Jacobs, PhD, Stanford University. She joined New York University in 2014 as an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Mechanical Engineering where she teaches courses in mechanobiology and biomaterials. Dr. Castillo is the recipient of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Young Investigator Award and a Career Development Award from the Department of Veterans Affairs. She serves as an Associate Editor for Clinical Reviews in Bone and Mineral Metabolism and is involved in peer-review activities for the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Castillo’s expertise includes skeletal biomechanics, mechanobiology, and repair; and stem cell mechanobiology.

Her laboratory studies interactions between mechanobiological cues and the musculoskeletal system with the long-term goal of developing novel biophysical, pharmaceutical, and stem cell-based interventions to treat devastating skeletal conditions and disease including osteoporosis, disuse bone loss, and age-related fracture. Her lab uses in vivo and in vitro approaches including engineering tools and analyses, state-of-the-art cell and molecular biology techniques, and translational experimentation to identify, characterize, and manipulate key mechanisms by which multipotent stem cells and lineage-determined cells sense and respond to mechanical and biochemical cues. Current funded areas of research include mechanically regulated bone adaptation and repair, recruitment of endogenous skeletal stem cells, and regenerative angiogenesis.
